ORTHOPAEDIC MANUAL THERAPY
What do we call
Orthopaedic Manual Therapy (OMT)?
Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (OMT) is a specialisation within physiotherapy in which manual techniques and exercises or movements are used as a way to diagnose and treat different structures of our neuromusculoskeletal system. guided by clinical reasoning and a biopsychosocial approach.
OMT is used to evaluate the different structures: joints, nerves, muscles, etc... that may be involved in an injury, in order to identify them and subsequently select those manoeuvres that are going to be indicated and discard those that are not.
These manoeuvres include the joint manipulation, joint mobilisation, mobilisation with movement (based on the Mulligan concept), mobilisation of the nervous system, therapeutic massage, therapeutic exercise, among others.
What is the Objective
Main of the OMT?
The main objective of OMT is the reduction of the patient's symptoms, be it pain, restriction of movement, as well as other neural symptoms (tingling sensation, burning, lack of strength or alterations in sensation). In general, with OMT we can improve people's quality of life by restoring their functionality.
